November newsletter: experimenting, admin and good music

A sketch image from my Bybrook project

This month seems to have flown by

There seems to be a lot going on at the moment. I can’t believe it’s nearly the end of another year. This will be my last e-mail for 2023. I’d like to thank you all for subscribing to my newsletter and to wish you seasons greetings and hopefully a few days to rest and relax.

What I’ve been up to this month

I am continuing to make a lot of edits for my Bybrook project. Experimenting a lot with many different ideas has allowed the project to shape its own direction. And I am very happy with the way it is evolving. There is plenty more to do but I am enjoying taking my time over the process.

I am also delighted that one of my images from “The Floor At The Arnolfini” has been accepted for the Corsham Pound Arts Open exhibition. You can find out more about the exhibition here. There are a few copies of the zine left as well. Find out more here.

Lastly, there are still some places on The Vision, the online workshop that I am running with Rob Knight. It runs from the 18th February 2024 to the 24th March 2024.  You can book a place here or contact me for more information.

What I learned this month

As I have more opportunities to display and sell my work, I am learning that there is a delicate balancing act in finding the right amount of time for creativity and admin work. The life of an artist is certainly not all about the making side of things!

What are my plans for next month?

I am hoping to have a little time away from things in the coming weeks. It will be good to get a break from admin. But it also feels like a quick creative break would allow me to come back refreshed and with extra energy.

What I’ve been writing about this month

My November blog is called “How do we find beauty in the mundane?” I think it is really important that we find inspiration and beauty in the smaller things that are often ignored by photographers and artists. I won’t be writing a piece in December, but I have plenty planned for early next year.

What have I been listening to this month

I saw two very good gigs this month. The first was from Lanterns on The Lake  (whom I have mentioned before). They now feature Radiohead’s drummer Philip Selway. Two days later I saw the excellent keyboard and electronic music of Jay Chakravorty, accompanied by live strings. This was a very intimate concert in the top room of a small pub in Bath. I am now enjoying Jay’s CD (with excellent artwork) and am looking forward to the release of his next album.

What have I seen this month

This month I enjoyed the Open Art Exhibition at the RWA. There are four galleries of extremely varied artwork, as well as separate exhibitions of artwork by staff and work by John Eaves. I left feeling completely overwhelmed and suffering from sensory overload. I will have to return as I couldn’t take in all the works of art on display.
